But the truth remains that there are numerous elements and chemicals that are used during the manufacturing of toys which are toxic and hazardous for children. Some of the chemicals found in toys are:

Phthalates: This is one of the main toxins that is present in plastic toys and is used to soften the plastic during manufacture.
Though it was considered harmless, new research has linked it to one of the reasons for childhood cancers due to the imbalance in hormones that are caused by the chemical. These are usually used in the production of sleep masks, pacifiers, teething rings and plastic toys that display flexible features.

Mercury: It is a known toxin and it has been found in toys used at bath-time. Mercury is extremely harmful for adults and children alike even if they come in contact with a tiny amount of mercury. Mercury is poison and affects the nervous system and the kidneys. In many cases, mercury poisoning is fatal.

Cadmium: Another commonly found toxin in lunch boxes and toys is cadmium which is not only harmful to the kidneys but causes irreversible damage to the intestines and lungs.

Lead: One of the common ingredients in all paints and plastics, there have been numerous recalls by toy companies in the USA and other nations when the launched toys were recalled due to the excessive lead in them. This is not a new phenomenon, and most of the plastic food containers, backpacks, books and toys have a certain amount of lead in them. The danger increases when these toys or books are put in the mouth by small children. The dangers apart from the lead poisoning include hyperactivity and low cognitive behavior.
