The Union Cabinet has approved setting up of the Indian Culinary Institute (ICI) at Tirupati in the State.
The first of its kind institution in the country will come up with an estimated investment of about Rs. 200 crore.
Official sources stated that infrastructure of the institute including the hostel facility would be in place in the next two years. Recruitment of staff for the autonomous body of the Ministry of Tourism would be completed by 2015-end and the first academic session would get underway in 2016.
In spite of pressure on the Centre to locate the institute in Delhi, the Union Cabinet had given its nod for setting up the ICI at Tirupati on Thursday following the sustained pursuance by Union Minister of State for Tourism K. Chiranjeevi.
Sources said he had convinced the Centre to locate it at Tirupati as the temple-town was a major educational centre with seven universities and easy connectivity to three major metros – Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai.
The institute will promote research and innovation, documentation and propagation of Indian cuisine and develop cuisine tourism of India apart from providing quality education in the field of culinary art. There is no institute worth mention at present which imparts training/knowledge on culinary art and formal education specific to Indian cuisine. The existing institutes of hotel management (IHMs) were only offering generic courses without specialised laboratories and the training provided was on skill and entry level, the sources said.
Land earmarked
The ICI would offer under graduate courses, masters degree courses and fellowship programmes.
The State government has already earmarked 14 acres of land free of cost at Tirupati.
Union Cabinet approves the establishment of the institute with an estimated cost of Rs. 200 crore
